從苗栗三灣路邊的荒煙漫草，轉進一條不起眼的小徑，步上全台所剩無幾的三級古蹟「糯米橋」（註）走到底，幾幢大型竹屋赫然躍入眼前，輕輕推開其中一動八角屋的竹門，空氣中瀰漫的竹炭餘溫，以及伴隨的濃厚炭味，隨即撲鼻而來。
